Yoga and Origami

I came across a posting about doing Yoga and referring to it as Origami. Since I just completed one of my favorite Origami structures called, Fireworks, and like to do Origami as a way to refresh myself from being on the computer by doing hands-on things, I couldn’t resist posting this article.

The other night after I came home from the gym, I was on Twitter to see what everyone was up to. I had just finished a session with the person who is now my favorite yoga instructor. It was the most inspiring class I have been to. I even came home and got Bri involved in an effort to wind her down to sleep easier. The first reply to me on Twitter while I was out, was from Rev.

“How was origami?”

Yoga Origami

I was laughing so hard. It is kind of like origami with the body, because you are constantly folding and bending. Anyway, that’s our new word for it. I’ll be talking to him and then let him go, saying, “I gotta go to origami.” Cute. It’s like our new secret word, but not so secret anymore. In this new class, I did this pose for the first time. Its official name is Supta Virasana, but in the class they called it a reclining hero pose. I had never seen it before, but I gave it a try and was able to do it fairly easily and comfortably without much effort. Of course when I came home and showed Bri, and she practically dropped into it within two seconds from a standing position like Gumby, I felt less achieved than before I walked into the door. No matter. I like it and have been doing it several times throughout the day. Sometimes, I shut the door to my office, just so I can stretch out with the prying eyes of the guys.

I love this post. I don’t think my body will fold like that though ;)

My body never DID fold like that, even in my tennis-playing days when agility was key. But I did love reading this post — origami eludes me too. Hahaha! (My daughter, though, and her daughter, seem to have been born to it. Interesting, huh?)

I do love to stretch though, and reach just a bit beyond yesterday. (I do a series of standing Pilates DVD’s, and with so many years behind me, I don’t do badly. I also do Qi-Gong — both energizing and relaxing. I think we work to the same ends… maybe that’s why I enjoy your blog. Plus knowing you a tiny bit from class… :) )

If I were president (LOL) I would make it mandatory to introduce yoga to all schools from kindergarten on and then we would all be able to be origami yoga babes at any age.

See you in class and thanks for posting.

I have always been a fan of folding paper particularly making paper airplanes. I started with a software called The Greatest Paper Airplanes published by Kitty Hawk. Unfortunately the software is no longer distributed today. It teaches how to fold 50 different paper airplanes. It’s a good place to start learning origami.
